On 10 December 2008, the Federal Government announced a public consultation on the protection of human rights in Australia. The aim of the Consultation is to seek the views of the Australian community on how human rights and responsibility should be protected in the future.

CLCs are seizing a 'once in a generation' opportunity to push for greater human rights protection. Launched in December 2008, the Federal Government is consulting on the adequacy of human rights protection, and the possibility of a 'bill' or 'charter' of rights.

The Western Sydney Tenants' Service Parramatta (WESTS Parramatta) is a Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Program that provides free tenancy advice to residential tenants. WESTS Parramatta serves tenants living in the Auburn, Blacktown, Holroyd and Parramatta local government areas.

Congratulations to Mr Eugene Butkowski, 2008 winner of the CCLCG Award in the Law and Justice Awards. Eugene is a medical scientist and qualified lawyer who volunteers weekly at the Albury Wodonga Legal Service. He provides legal advice and assistance to disadvantaged clients and has also traveled twice to Rwanda for the Operation Open Heart Surgery team.

NSW Fair Trading Minister, Virginia Judge has announced the Rees Government will provide $645,000 funding over three years to the Macquarie Legal Centre Inc. to operate a Home Building Advocacy Service (HoBAS) for consumers.
